Living for God's Glory in the Family

Joel Beeke's outstanding new book, "Living for God's Glory: An Introduction to Calvinism" is now available. The book is a 414 page hardback from Reformation Heritage Books. You can order here BOOK.

Among other topics, the book contains chapters on marriage and family. The Puritans were passionately God-centered regarding family life. They believed that the purpose of marriage was:
1. For the mutual help of one another.
2. For procreation.
3. For protection against immorality.

All three purposes are soundly biblical.

A very powerful point made in the book is that having children is a God-centered responsibility. The author writes, "The Puritans believed that having children is not simply a private matter to be decided between a husband and a wife. Rather, from their perspective, children are a gift of God through which believers are to serve the family, the church and the state." William Gouge is referenced with his view that Christians should have children so "that the world might be increased: and not simply increased, but with a legitimate brood, and distinct families, which are the seminaries of cities and the Commonwealths. Yea also that in the world the Church by an holy seed might be preserved and propagated (Mal. 2:15)."
